Over the summer holidays families joined the Bedfont Lakes rangers to go Wild on Wednesdays.
During the first session, on 3rd August, children of all ages explored the dipping pond to discover the creatures that lurk there. They used the nets donated by the Friends of Bedfont Lakes earlier in the year. The children also got artistic in the information centre painting beautiful pictures of pond life.
On 10th August the children hunted in the undergrowth for bugs and other beasties. They found weird and wonderful creatures including centipedes, frogs, toads and a lesser stag beetle. The children recreated some of their discoveries using pipe cleaners, glue, pompoms and lolly sticks back in the information centre. Among their creations were bug masks, bug headbands, door hangers and plantpot decorations.
Pond dipping was on the agenda again for the 17th August, as well as a nature quiz trail around the park where the children's nature knowledge was tested to the max.
On 24th August families constructed ladybird houses from bits of elder tree, then took part in a big bug hunt where they discovered many creepy crawlies, which were captured in pots for closer examination before being released back into the park.
The last session, on 31st August, gave children a final chance to explore the dipping pond. They netted a huge number of water scorpions, looping leeches and slimy snails. Also on offer was a treasure trail in which the children answered a series of clues that led them to Sid the Squirrel's treasure chest; they were rewarded with a sweet treat.
All in all it was a very sucessful summer holiday. Over 200 children took part in the programme and had lots of fun (and they probably didn't even realise that they were learning at the same time!).
